Introduction

Hi my name is Jonathon Mills and i made this blog for my operating systems class and so far this has been a good class.I am a senior this year and i play varsity soccer and varsity baseball. I look forward to this class because not only so far has it been fun but computer technology is the field of study i am going into in college so this will be a great help to me. As you can tell from my layout pictures i love cars, movies, and vidoe games.

10/30 Warm-up

The article starts off saying that these new TV's are releasing gases into the atmosphere and are now four times the amount than what they thought. This gas is called Nitrogen trifluoride and is 17,000 times more effective at warming the atmosphere then an equal mass of carbon dioxide. This colourless, odourless, non-flammable gas is used by the electronics industry mainly for equipment cleaning, for etching microcircuits and for manufacturing liquid-crystal flat-panel displays and thin-film photovoltaic cells. I honestly don't know what to do about it i mean the way i see it is i'm not going to be here if something were to happen so i'm not worried about.

Moore's law was founded by Gordan E. Moore. He was also the co-founder of Intel. Almost every measure of the capabilities of digital electronic devices is linked to Moore's law: processing speed, memory capacity, even the number and size of pixels in digital cameras.

10/22 warm-up

The article is basically saying that TV's are advancing extremely fast. I think that TV's will advance to the point of 3D holograms. It's also a possibility if it hasn't already happened that TV's will be programed into the wall.

It is an emerging field of technology to shrink already small components to even smaller components.

2. What does it look like?
It is a series of rolled up carbon tubes that look like hexagons.

3. What might it mean for future technology?
This means that in the future there will be new more productive ways to create chips that will hold battery life longer and better than before.

Contextual Clue

The word that i am doing this assignment on is microcomputer. From the text "Like minicomputers and mainframes, microcomputers have become powerful, complex machines. Unlike their larger cousins, PC's do not always have multiple users using them at the same time; ...." From the context that the word is used in i think the word means that it is like the PC just smaller and possibly portable.

History of The Computer

In 1939 Hewlett-Packard is founded by the Hewlett brothers in their garage. In 1941 Konrad Zuse completes the Z3 computer. In 1943 during world war 2 the very first flight similator was built. In1946 the public is introduced the ENIAC. In 1948 IBM´s Selective Sequence Electronic Calculator is created. In 1949 the EDSAC, the first stored-program computer, is completed. In 1952 John von Neumann´s IAS computer is created. In 1954 the IBM 650 magnetic drum calculator is established as the first mass produced computer. In 1985 the Amiga 1000 is released to the public. The Differance

What is the differance between operating software and application software?

Operating software is the software on the computer that basically operates it. It's the software that does the algerithms for you so that you don't have to and it helps you to access things. Where as the application software is the software that controls your applications such as Word and Power Point.

Comparing Memory

There are four types of computer memory that i am comparing: ROM, RAM, Virtual and Caching. ROM stands for Read-Only-Memory. RAM stands for Random-Access-Memory. ROM uses diodes to connect the lines of intersection if the number is one and if the number is zero then the lines are not connected. These chips are also very reliable and do not use alot of energy and contain all the necessary information to control the device. RAM uses transistors to turn on and off the capasitors at each intersection to create a memory cell. The down side to this type of memory is that it needs to be refreshed often and if not refreshed it will forget what its holding. Plus all the refreshing takes time and slows the memory down; therefore, the more RAM you have the better off you are. Virtual memory is most common in operating systems and desktop computers. With virtual memory, what the computer looks at RAM for areas that have not been used recently and copy them onto the hard disk. This frees up space in RAM to load the new application. Modern computers have both L1 and L2 caches, and now computers also have L3 cache. L1, L2and L3 are levels and speeds at which your computer work. The idea behind caching is to use a small amount of expensive memory to speed up a large amount of slower, less-expensive memory.

Mainframe VS. PC

PC is the personal computer. In the PC you have the CPU, mother board, power supply, hard disk, operating system integrated drive electronics (IDE) controller, peripheral component interconnect (PCI) bus, sound and graphics cards. Then you have what you see the tower which holds all the components, the display monitor, mouse, keyboard and speakers. From some of the articles i have read mainframes for the most part have the same components as the PC. As one article said the main differance is the operating system. PC uses UNIX which is time-sharing, and mianframes use OS/390 which does both batch-oriented and time-sharing. Also another thing thats different is the cost differance and the speed. PC' are cost efficiant while mainframes are expensive and alot faster than PC's.

Google Docs

The author for this article is talking about google apps. and the add on's and advances that google is making. They are making it so that college students and average people are able to use it for any purpose. Interactive Powerpoint Reflection

I liked this activity because it was fun and i learned new things. Everything worked for our group and i think we should do this again sometime. I would have changed the amount of time we put into this activity because i would want it to look better and be more animated.

New Technologies

Our government can use technology to aid natural disaster by using computers to file names and people that have survived or need help. They could use technology to see what is coming as far as a natural disaster and be able to prepare for it better using satilite imagery.

Warm-up 9/24/08

This new application for the iphone campiagn feature is the newest addition of the governments use of technology. This application allows you to follow the polls and information on the candidites. This is usefull for people who are big in piolitics and following the candidites. I see this in tens years probably being used for news sports and other things that have up to date stats and news.

Sarah Palin's email hacked!!!

Sarah Palin's yahoo e-mail got hacked by a 20 year old kid and the surprise of it all was that he used knowledge from google and wikipedia search engines. Apparently it was very easy to do the hacker said that he found all the answers to the security questions on google and wikipedia. Yeah this could happen to me because if someone knew enough information about me it wouldn't be any problem answering my security question

I really don't know that much about robotics other than there's people and scientists that are always trying to do things with robotics to make life easier. I really don't know of anybody that has an interest in robotics. I probably wouldn't take the class if it was offered here because i have other classes to take.
